The University of the Western Cape (UWC) has once again been recognised as one of the continent’s leading institutions, securing a position in the Top 10 of the QS Sub-Saharan Africa Rankings 2026. Building The University From Within: UWC Puts Staff Capacity At The Centre Of Its Future

At a time when South African higher education faces growing pressure, from funding constraints to rising student needs, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) is making a clear statement: institutional strength begins with staff capacity. This message came through strongly during UWC’s annual General Staff Orientation, where 150 staff members were formally welcomed through a three-day programme hosted by the Human Resources Department.
 
Study Questions Compliance Of Baby Food Labelling In SA

A new study by a University of the Western Cape (UWC) dietician and researcher suggests that some baby food companies may be flouting Regulation 991 (R991) of 2012, a national health regulation aimed at curbing aggressive advertising and promotion of products such as infant formula, cereals and juices. The study by Aneeqah Latief from the Department of Dietetics and Nutrition warned that such practices may undermine breastfeeding and mislead parents into believing these products are superior to breast milk, considered the best for optimal infant growth and development.
 
 
 
OPINION: Why Are Students Hungry In South Africa In 2026?

The recognition that many university students in South Africa face food insecurity and hunger is not new. At a National Colloquium on Access to Food for Students in South African Tertiary Institutions in Cape Town in 2018, I presented evidence showing that, even in high-income countries like Australia and the United States, students are more likely to be food insecure than the general population.
