During his recent visit to China, the Rector and Vice-Chancellor of the University of the Western Cape (UWC), Prof Robert Balfour, was invited to a high-level meeting by Dr Jian Zhang, Mayor of Jinhua City, to strengthen strategic cooperation in education, innovation, the development of young entrepreneurs, and cultural exchange.
 
 
 
 
Silent Epidemic: Oral Disease Hits Half The World But Is Ignored By Global Health Leaders

It's a disease that keeps children out of school, limits adults’ job prospects and increases the risk of chronic conditions like heart disease and diabetes. Yet, oral disease remains largely ignored in healthcare planning and global health priorities despite its far-reaching impact, warned University of the Western Cape (UWC) Professor Emeritus and dental health expert, Sudeshni Naidoo.

Research indicates that it takes 500 years for disposable nappies to decompose, while South Africa generates 900 000 tons of nappies annually. This poses a significant challenge for the country as nappies often end up in the environment due to inadequate waste management systems.
 
 
Sudden Weather Changes Spike Heart And Stroke Risks

Sudden drops in temperatures between hot and cold, now occurring more frequently as climate change intensifies, are associated with a higher risk of stroke and heart failure in Africa, with elderly women facing the highest risk of death - a new review by the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has revealed.
