During the 8th Pan African Congress (PAC) held in Johannesburg from 14-16 January 2014, I was approached by Prof. Tunde Babawale, Director of the Centre for Black Arts and Civilization (CBAAC) which was cooperating with the Centre for Advanced Studies of African Society (CASAS) on convening the Congress. Prof. Babawale asked if I would deliver the Annual Black History Month Public Lecture at the University of Ibadan, on Pan-Africanism. He suggested a title which I accepted and, in the next few weeks, I wrote a presentation which I delivered at the University of Ibadan on the 27th February, 2014.
CBAAC kindly agreed to allow me a little time to revise the paper before publication but, instead of keeping to the original form, I decided to conflate it with a much earlier paper ( The Wish to Unite: The Historical and Political Context of the Pan-African Movement) which I presented to South African parliamentarians at a workshop on; Africa: Politics and Economy, in the Old Assembly Chamber of the South African Parliament in Cape Town on 18-19 February 2003. This text is the result, providing a little more substance and detail than its progenitors.
