Background

The Scholarship of Engagement (SoE) model as an infused principle at UWC is well-known to all UWC staff, students, alumni and partners. However, it has more recently gained considerable interest from other local and international Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) as a preferred model. This is because the SoE model enables HEIs to present their Societal (Broader) Impact (SI/BI) in relation to each of the scholarships (Teaching and learning, Research & Service) required for social transformation. Globally, nationally and regionally, transformation policies to address past inequalities have been high on the priority list of governments, and HEIs are seen as key stakeholders to ensure societal transformation. There is a need to have ‘Engagement’ Factors to assist HEIs with the classification, planning, implementation, assessment and reporting of their engagement status, all of which would contribute to the ability of HEIs to quantify and qualify their social transformation impact.

We have ensured the establishment of several regional, national and international network partnerships over the past three years. You have been introduced to some of these during the Community Engagement Colloquium of October 2021, and also when I announced the UWC-ORIC virtual platform to be launched in the 2nd quarter of 2022. Additional to this platform will be the further and accelerated extension of international partnerships, because the internationalisation of policies, processes and frameworks for the SoE will contribute to the required SI for transformation by HEI.

I am delighted to share with you an invitation to register for and attend a free international webinar on 25 April 2022, 15:00-16:00 (SAST), hosted by Academia Europaea Cardiff Knowledge Hub. During this webinar panellists will discuss and debate issues with the audience regarding the role of university and academy networks of expertise that play a key role at the SI policy interface, but which are not always understood, recognised and/or sufficiently resourced. Dr Cornel Hart will be a panellist to represent not only UWC’s SoE model and SI framework championed and led/headed by the DVC Academic Prof. Lawack, but also as a board member of the South African Higher Education Community Engagement Forum (SAHECEF) - the only forum/network representing community engagement of HEIs in SA.

Professor Vivienne Lawack
Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Academic
