UWC Introduces A New Fee Structure For Greater Access To Master’s Thesis And Doctoral programmes
In a bold move to widen access to postgraduate education, the University of the Western Cape (UWC) has introduced a new, significantly more accessible fee structure for Master’s and Doctoral thesis-based degrees. The revised model, set to take effect in 2026, aims to make advanced postgraduate study for South African and international students possible, while strengthening UWC’s position as a leading research-driven institution in Africa.
Postgraduate education plays a crucial role in South Africa’s development, yet financial barriers often remain the most significant obstacle.
The new fee structure directly responds to challenges with a fairer, more predictable, and more equitable system. Instead of paying full tuition upfront in the first year, the new model spreads tuition across each year of study. This approach makes the annual cost more manageable and removes the steep financial hurdle that many face in their first year of study.
