International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism and Transphobia
Yesterday, 17 May 2023, was International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia, Intersexism, and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT). This year's theme is "Together Always: United in Diversity'', a theme decided by many Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Intersex, Asexual, and Queer+ (LGBTIAQ+) organisations and movements around the world for the recognition of diverse approaches in education, awareness, and advocacy movements by human rights defenders, LGBTIAQ+ organisations, millions of people within our communities, and allies.

In 2006 the Gender Equity Unit organised the first march against homophobia outside the Student Centre at the University of the Western Cape, a march constituting of students, staff, and faculty members protesting their right to live in a homophobia-free campus. Through this march and the continuation of efforts by students and staff in building towards a homophobia-free campus was the formation of Loud Enuf a programme that continues to amplify the voices of the LGBTIAQ+ community through collective efforts alongside members of the UWC community and beyond.

As Audre Lorde once stated, “It is not our differences that divide us. It is our inability to recognise, accept, and celebrate those differences," so may we continue to unite our efforts in ensuring that #IamUWC means that we will work collectively to ensure that we build towards a brave, just, reformed, and inclusive community for all.
