NRF Awards 2023: Celebrating Research Excellence
Women’s month ended on a high note as the University of the Western Cape (UWC) celebrated the success of one of its emerging researchers.

Dr Omowunmi Isafiade won the Research Excellence Award for Early Career/Emerging Researchers category in the 2023 National Research Foundation (NRF) Awards. She was also lauded for contributing to the world of knowledge and research.

The NRF aspires to develop and enhance the research stature of early and emerging researchers, prioritising black, female and people with disabilities as part of its transformation agenda. It is one of the foundation’s endeavours to redress historical imbalances in the South African researcher cohort. This award recognises outstanding research performance by current researchers in any discipline who are NRF grant holders. This aligns with UWC’s research strategy, which aims to support early career researchers through our programs.

Dr Isifiade is a senior lecturer in the Department of Computer Science Programme from the Faculty of Natural Sciences. She acknowledged the enabling environment at UWC and her entire support system for her research success. She was a research award nominee in the Early Career Category for the UWC Research Recognition awards in 2021.

Professor José Frantz, Deputy Vice-Chancellor of Research and Innovation said:  “Supporting and building capacity among early career researchers is essential for succession planning at UWC. We are proud of the achievement of Dr Omowunmi Isafiade.”
