The University of the Western Cape (UWC), through the DVC: Research & Innovation Special Projects Unit, recently visited Grade 1 learners at St Augustine Primary School as part of Child Protection Awareness Month.

The engagement combined science education, creativity and child protection advocacy, creating an inspiring and memorable experience for young learners while reinforcing the message that every child matters and deserves to feel safe, supported and valued.

Learning Through Discovery and Imagination

The visit began with an exciting introduction to the world of science. One of UWC's own scientists engaged the learners, sharing insights into what scientists do and how curiosity, creativity and learning can help solve real-world challenges.

For many of the children, it was an opportunity to see that scientists are ordinary people who ask questions, explore ideas and make discoveries that improve lives. The session encouraged learners to think about their own future and the possibilities that education can unlock.

The excitement continued with a superhero-themed activity. Learners were invited to share who their favourite superheroes are before drawing themselves as superheroes. The activity encouraged self-belief and creativity while reinforcing the message that every child has unique strengths and talents.

"Today we learned that we can be superheroes too," one learner proudly shared while showing off their drawing.

Beyond the fun and creativity, the visit carried an important message. As part of Child Protection Awareness Month, the team engaged learners in age-appropriate discussions about safety, support and speaking up when something does not feel right.

Through interactive activities, songs and affirmations, the learners were reminded that they are never alone and that trusted adults are available to help them when needed. Together, the children enthusiastically repeated: "I Matter. I Am Never Alone. I Am Safe, Loved and Protected."

These simple but powerful messages formed the foundation of the engagement and aligned with the national focus on creating safe and supportive environments for children.

The learners' energy and participation demonstrated the importance of creating spaces where children feel heard, valued and empowered.

The outreach reflected UWC's commitment to community engagement and social responsibility, extending learning beyond the classroom while supporting the well-being of young people.

It was a privilege for the DVC: Research & Innovation Special Projects Unit to spend time with the Grade 1 learners of St Augustine Primary School. Their enthusiasm, confidence and imagination served as a reminder of the immense potential that exists within every child.

The school proudly states in its motto, "Enter to Learn – Leave to Serve". The visit embodied this spirit by encouraging young learners to dream big, believe in themselves and recognise that they have the power to make a positive difference in the world.

Through meaningful engagements such as these, UWC continues to invest in future generations, helping to nurture curious minds, confident voices and the heroes of tomorrow.
