Signals Fourth Edition - November 2021
The final edition of Signals for 2021 is out.

In this edition, we focus on the sterling work of the Institute of Poverty, Land and Agrarian Studies (PLAAS) with a series of articles that focuses on its key research areas such as land reform, the vulnerability of women in land ownership and the disastrous impact of the COVID-19 pandemic on small-scale producers and informal traders.

Then, we have Prof Quentin Williams’s essay on the place of Kaaps within universities and Prof Anthony Daila’s thoughtful contribution on why the reform of South Africa’s matrimonial property laws is important.

SARChI Chair, Prof Sarojini Nadar and her colleague Dr Megan Robertson offer us a view on contemporary debates on the place of women in theology through the learnings of the formidable theologian, the late Rev Dr Katie Geneva Cannon.

This time, we have two profiles – one of Prof Michael Davies-Coleman, the outgoing Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences and one of his successor, Prof Burtram Fielding. We thought it fitting to pay tribute to Prof Davies-Coleman’s leadership as well as finding out more about Prof Fielding’s vision for the faculty.

As always, we have regular features such as art, poetry and research achievements as well as an overview of UWC’s new Institutional Operating Plan (2021-2025).

I hope you enjoy the edition and look forward to your feedback and we’ll see you in 2022.
