The Department of Dietetics offers three postgraduate programs:
  • Masters in Public Health Nutrition (by course work and mini-thesis)
  • Masters in Nutrition (by Dissertation only)

Why apply for Masters in Public Health Nutrition (MPH Nutrition)?
The Division of Dietetics in its unique philosophy of undergraduate and postgraduate study underscores the aims of the primary healthcare (PHC) approach, i.e. comprehensive care through the integration of promotive, preventative, curative and rehabilitative services, intersectoral collaboration and full participation of communities.
This qualification will enable candidates to act as managers and planners of nutrition thereby addressing the current need for appropriately trained personnel.
The institution of postgraduate programmes in nutrition will provide opportunities to advance knowledge and research in nutrition as one of the most important environmental determinants of health throughout the life cycle.

Duration and structure of the course:
  • This is a part-time course (two years minimum and five years maximum).
  • Performance will be assessed by means of coursework assignments and exercises.
  • Face-to-face contact will be intensive classroom situations. Classroom learning up to eight weeks per year is augmented by assignments and exercises.
  • Core courses will be presented during summer school (January - February) and winter school (July - August).
  • Performance will be assessed by means of assignments, exercises, and an examination on completion of a course.
  • Examinations will be evaluated by an external examiner assigned for each course.
  • The mini-thesis will be examined by internal and external examiners.
Admission requirements:
  • Four year integrated BSc Dietetics or Nutrition with a minimum aggregate pass of 60% or
  • A BSc Dietetics or Nutrition honours, with a minimum aggregate pass of 60% or
  • A BSc in Dietetics or Nutrition and a postgraduate Diploma in Hospital Dietetics, with a minimum pass of 60% in both or
  • Any other equivalent qualification which, in the opinion of the Senate and after recommendation by the Division is recognised.

Masters in Nutrition (MSc Nutrition)

Why apply for the course?
The Masters in Nutrition by dissertation only is intended for the student who would like to pursue an in-depth exploration of a nutrition research question. On completion the graduate may proceed with a doctorate.

Duration and structure of the course: one year full time or two years part-time
 
Admission requirements:  BSc Dietetics or an equivalent professional qualification in Human Nutrition, with an average academic performance of at least 60% in the final year of study.

Subjects: Dissertation only. Students may be advised to register for modules in research methodology and/or statistics.
