Welcome to the Department of Physiotherapy
Hello and welcome to the Department of Physiotherapy at the University of the Western Cape. The Physiotherapy degree at UWC is a four-year Bachelor of Science programme, where you will study the human body and how it moves in relation to the environment. You’ll learn about human anatomy and the associated diseases and conditions that affect human movement.
The department has a strong emphasis on conducting research with a high impact on driving the profession forward, as well as improving patient care in the health system. Undergraduate students are often included in staff research projects, exposing them to real-world problems that sit at the boundaries of our knowledge.
We are one of the few physiotherapy departments in the country who actively recruit students with visual impairment (VI) and have more than 10 years of experience in supporting students with visual impairment. In 2017 we became the first department in the country to successfully place a student with visual impairment into the ICU.
We have significant expertise in using emerging technologies as part of the teaching and learning experience at UWC, and students in this programme are trained to not only participate in the increasingly online and digital culture of the 21st century, but to lead it.
If you’re someone who enjoys working with people, who thinks they can make a difference in the world, and who believes that healthcare is important for everyone, then physiotherapy may be an option for you.
