     Biography

Professor Serena Isaacs is an Associate Professor and registered Research Psychologist in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape. She also serves as the Head of Department.

She graduated with a PhD in psychology, funded through the National Research Foundation of South Africa Thuthuka PhD-track, in 2018.

Her research interests lie primarily in child/family/community resilience studies, student wellbeing, intervention development and evaluation research as well as substance use. She teaches at both an undergraduate and postgraduate level as well as supervises honours, masters and PhD students.

Biography

Dr Leigh Tucker is a registered Clinical Psychologist and the Deputy HoD for Postgraduate Studies in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

She completed her clinical training in various hospitals across the Durban Metropole and has experience in private practice.  Dr Tucker teaches across Postgraduate levels in the areas of psychological assessment, psychopathology and clinical skills, and is a member of the MPsych Clinical training collective. She supervises Honours, Masters and Doctoral students for research and is the Coordinator of the Doctoral programme. Her research interests include child and adolescent mental health, gender and masculinities, graduate professional development, and One Health as an integrative approach to optimise the wellbeing of all species. Dr Tucker has held executive roles within the non-profit organisation, Pets as Therapy (South Africa), and is amongst a network of professionals in Africa working to enhance the field of human-animal interaction and animal-assisted interventions.

Biography

Dr Tracey-Ann Adonis is a senior lecturer at the University of the Western Cape Department of Psychology. She holds the position of Deputy HOD (Undergraduate matters) and is a research psychologist registered with the HPCSA. She teaches at both Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels.

Previously, she worked as a researcher in the Community Engagement Unit, a unit in the office of the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic), for 15 years. She has extensive experience in partnership projects at the University of Western Cape, as she was the community-based education coordinator in the Western Cape Community Partnership Project (WCCPP) and the academic coordinator in the Community Higher Education Services Partnership (CHESP) Project.

An alumnus from UWC, with a D Phil in Science Education (graduated 2018), she explored the value of partnerships in facilitating effective school learning environments that contribute to community development, community well-being and overall quality of life. Her PhD also facilitated her current research interests in educator psychological well-being within challenging school contexts, an area that required attention pre-COVID-19 and amplified post-pandemic and as we actively work towards SDGs 3 (Good health and well-being) and 4 (Quality Education).

Additional research interests include substance use and quality of life as they relate to women’s health and adolescents and emerging adults. Dr Adonis is passionate about curriculum development that facilitates opportunities for students to learn within the community in these research areas and actively adopts a Scholarship of Engagement for Societal Impact approach in all learning, teaching and research endeavours.

Biography

Professor Nceba Z. Somhlaba has studied at all the three universities in the Western Cape - UWC (undergraduate), UCT (honours), and Stellenbosch (Masters and D.Phil, as well as as a postdoctoral research fellow), joined UWC's Psychology Department 7 years ago, after a 9-year tenure of teaching at Stellenbosch University.

Prof. Somhlaba's teaching interests range from psychopathology, theories of personality development, and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), to professional and research ethics.

His research includes grief, bereavement and loss; stress, appraisal and coping (and has supervised various students in these, and other, areas at honours, masters and PhD levels).

Biography

Professor Erica Munnik is a senior clinical psychologist who has been registered with the HPCSA since 2001. She is an Associate Professor, researcher and supervisor at
the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape. She teaches UG and PG modules and does clinical and research supervision at the Master's and PhD levels. Prof. Munnik coordinated the Masters Professional Training programme in the past and is currently responsible for the coordination of the work-integrated learning and the internship components of the Masters Clinical Professional Training programme.  
                                                                                                
Prof. Munnik is an established researcher with a niche in the field of test development that dovetails with her teaching in the area of psychological assessment. Most of her research is focused on test development and the adaptation of measures to ensure relevance for use in the South African context. Her research, including two post-doctoral projects, the development of the E3SR, E3SR-R, E3SR (Afrikaans version) and E3SR (isiXhosa version) is/ was funded by the NRF. She also has an interest in mental well-being with research focused on depression, burnout and stress. She is affiliated with and an active member of the International Test Commission (ITC), the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA), the Psychological Association of South Africa (PsySSA) and the Association for Research in Infant and Child Development (ARCID).

Biography

Professor Michelle Andipatin holds a PHD in Psychology and currently is the Deputy Dean Research in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences at the University of the Western Cape.

She has a broad array of research interests that include but are not limited to: Women’s reproductive health, men and masculinities, alternate healing modalities, mental health and well-being, philosophical issues in science and research methodologies. Understanding social impact and the measurement thereof has become an important interest of hers.

As part of her portfolio she is spearheading the launch of a new journal called the Journal of Community, Health and Social Sciences. She has been appointed as one of the editors in chief of the editorial board. The launch of the research niche in Digital Health is also an exciting venture she is instrumental in. In addition to her role as Deputy Dean, she has also championed the Centre for Diversity in Psychological Practice since 2015-2023. As part of her Community Engagement, Professor Andipatin chairs the board of the C4HF and is currently a research consultant to the centre. Her aspirations for the C4HF is that it becomes peerless and it become a thought leader in its enterprise.

Biography

Professor Maria Florence is a registered Research Psychologist who holds the position of Associate Professor within the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape, South Africa. At present, she serves as the Deputy Dean of Learning and Teaching in the Faculty of Community and Health Sciences.

Her scholarly pursuits primarily revolve around maternal and adolescent mental health as it relates to quality of life within low-income communities in South Africa. Notably, her recent research endeavours involve the formulation of an intervention designed for pregnant women engaging in substance use within low-income rural areas in the Western Cape.

Simultaneously, she is actively involved in research towards the development of a substance use prevention program tailored for early adolescents residing in low-income communities.

Biography

Professor Shazly Savahl is based in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape. He obtained a Doctoral degree through the University of the Western Cape/Ghent University partnership, funded by the Vlaamse Interuniversiteit Raad Doctoral Scholarship Programme.

His research interests include childhood and youth studies, well-being and quality of life research, social psychology (social identity, oppression and social justice), discourse analysis,
data modelling and analysis of population-level data.

Currently, he is the lead principal investigator of the Children’s Worlds: International Survey on Children’s Well-Being, and the South African Multinational Qualitative Study on Children’s Understanding of Well-Being. He is a founding and current board member of the South African Positive Psychology Association, a member of the National Children’s Rights Intersectoral Coordinating Committee, the International Society for Quality of Life Studies, and an executive board member of the International Society for Child Indicators. He holds a B2 rating
(internationally acclaimed researcher) from the National Research Foundation of South Africa and is a member of the Academy of Science of South Africa.

Biography

Mr Brendon Faroa is a Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape.

Mr Faroa holds a Honours degree in English Literature as well as an Honours and Masters in Psychology.

In 2009, Mr Faroa was nominated by the English Department to be part of the Global Consortium Honours Programme in the Centre for Humanities Research at UWC. This project was linked to the Robben Island Museum and the Mayibuye Centre. The project focused on the meaning of 1989 for South Africa and the world. The research done with students from University of Minnesota and UWC formed a basis of an exhibition at the Robben Island Museum.

Mr Faroa has worked in Student Development and Support Services (SDS), also Interning at UWC's Centre for Student Support Services' (CSSS) Academic Support Unit as a Senior Student Coordinator and Programme Coordinator. In 2009, Mr Faroa was also the recipient of the Student Development and Support Awards for Achiever of the Year and the Award for Leadership and Social Responsibilities for his roles in the Emerging and Advanced Leadership programmes in SDS. Mr Faroa has accumulated invaluable experience in project management, student development, support and academic support, including mentoring of undergraduate students.

He joined the Department of Psychology in 2012. Since then, Mr Faroa has etched out his presence as an emerging scholar. To this end, his Masters research focused on the developmental trajectories of antisocial offending behaviours discernable through self-explanations. His teaching at first and senior undergraduate levels includes modules in developmental and health psychology.

Mr Faroa has authored and co-authored peer reviewed articles in accredited journals, presented at various conferences and symposia. He also regularly engages in research and projects geared toward the scholarship of learning and teaching while his community engagement endeavours include activities and projects in the UWC community as well as communities outside of the university.

Mr Faroa is currently enrolled for his PhD at Institute for Social and Health Sciences, University of South Africa (UNISA) which is based at the South African Medical Research Council’s Violence, Injury and Peace Research Unit (SAMRC-VIPRU).

Biography

Ms Michéle Willemse is a registered Clinical Psychologist (HPCSA) and Lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

She obtained a Masters in Psychology by thesis at the University of Stellenbosch and thereafter a Masters in Clinical Psychology at the University of Pretoria. Ms Willemse accumulated a variety of clinical experience during her MA Clinical training, internship and community service years at various sites across the country including Weskoppies Psychiatric Hospital, Pretoria; Lentegeur Psychiatric Hospital in Cape Town and Dr George Mukhari Hospital in Ga-Rankuwa, Pretoria North.

Ms Willemse is the coordinator for the First Year Level and teaches across Undergraduate and Postgraduate levels, including the MPsych Clinical programme. She engages in both research supervision for Honours and Masters students and clinical supervision of the practical training of Clinical Masters students in the department.

Her research interests are in the broad areas of neurodevelopmental disorders (ADHD), resilience, disability specifically with regard to mental health disorders, reasonable accommodation and group dynamics.

Mr Kyle Jackson is a lecturer within the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). He is also serves as the second-year coordinator. 

He completed his B.Psych degree at Pearson Institute, Durbanville campus and his MA Research Psychology degree at UWC. He is registered as both a counsellor and a research psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Mr Jackson is currently involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also engaging in the research supervision of both Honours and Masters students within the Department of Psychology. He also serves as an internal reviewer for the Journal of Culture, Health & Sexuality, Social and Health Sciences journal and the South African Journal of Psychology.

Ms Zorina Noordien is a lecturer within the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

She completed her MA ind Psychology degree at the University of the Western Cape and her MA Clinical Psychology degree at UCT. She is registered Clinical Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

Mrs Claudia Raats is a lecturer within the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC).

She completed her B.Psych degree and MA in Research Psychology degree at the UWC. Mrs Raats has a keen interest in the enhancement of psychology curricula and the assessment of learning achievement. She has been working in the curriculum field for 8 years inclusive of teaching, postgraduate proposal review and thesis supervision.

Mrs Raats is currently involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also engaging in the research supervision of both Honours and Masters students within the department of Psychology.

Biography

Mr. Anton Delport completed his undergraduate studies at the University of the Western Cape, along with an Honours degree in Psychology and a Master’s degree in Research Psychology. He is currently in the final year of his PhD at the same institution.

As a dedicated academic and researcher in the field of Health Psychology, his work focuses on the intersection of HIV and syndemic-related barriers to antiretroviral therapy. His research
investigates the relationship between HIV and common mental health disorders and SAVA syndemics among people living with HIV. He explores these issues at the individual, family, and community level, emphasising the syndemic nature of these interconnected challenges and their broader implications for well-being.

Mr. Delport is actively involved in teaching at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels within the Department of Psychology. He also supervises Honours and Master’s students, guiding their research projects in areas aligned with his expertise.

In addition to his research and teaching, Mr. Delport has a strong interest in measurement theory, particularly in adapting psychological measures for the South African context to ensure cultural and contextual validity.

Biography

Mr Lungelo Mlangeni is a lecturer within the Department of Psychology at UWC. Before this, he was a lecturer at UKZN from 2018 to 2024.

His broad research interests are in social psychology. In particular, he is interested in group phenomena within evolutionary and interactive contexts using interactional experimental
data (see viappl.org).

Mr Mlangeni is very keen about the advancement of research methodology and data analysis within psychology and the social sciences in general.

Biography

Mrs Heidi Witten is a lecturer in the Department of Psychology at the University of the Western Cape (UWC). She is registered as a Research Psychologist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa.

She completed her Undergraduate degree, BA Honours (Psychology) degree and her MA Research Psychology degree at UWC. She is currently busy with her PhD at UWC.

Mrs Witten is currently involved in teaching at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels whilst also engaging in the research supervision of both Honours and Masters students within the Department.  Her research interests lie primarily in child and adolescent well-being and flourishing. She also has a keen interest in threat and risk assessment, domestic violence and sexual misconduct awareness.
