The Department of Sociology at UWC has a rich intellectual tradition steeped in the highest standards of research and academic rigour. We are passionate about deepening sociological knowledge and insight to address important social challenges that affect the real world. The work we do is marked by sterling research, exemplified by a variety of approaches to research including surveys, in-depth interviews, big data, social demography, causal inference, and historical archival work. Examples of committed engagement with fundamental social issues in the African landscape, such as research on sexuality, racial issues, gender discrimination, animal rights, educational challenges, family dynamics and mental health, is aligned with expertise in socio-political, economic, and cultural issues.
