Small Business Clinic
Overview

OVERVIEW OF THE SMALL BUSINESS CLINIC (SBC)

The SBC is an experiential learning hub established to enhance students’ interest in entrepreneurship across various disciplinary fields. Its core purpose is to assist local entrepreneurs, startups, and small businesses to grow their businesses to greater heights. The Clinic works to revive the economy, one business at a time, by nurturing an entrepreneurial spirit and mindset.

The SBC contributes to UWC's goal of becoming more practically engaged with problems faced by small and micro enterprises with a view to finding implementable solutions. By bringing different role-players together, the Clinic helps facilitate youth interest in entrepreneurship.

OBJECTIVES

1. To educate students in Entrepreneurship through practical experiences that facilitate the integration of theory and application.

The activities that will occur within the Clinic will afford senior students in the economic and management sciences (i) the opportunity of applying theory to practice and (ii) completing practical activities/assessments that will contribute to their workplace readines.

2. To develop social values towards entrepreneurship

Promote youth entrepreneurship as a response to high unemployment by providing students with opportunities to engage directly with small business owners, applying their theoretical knowledge in real-world contexts and developing pro-social entrepreneurial values.

3. To offer mentorship to students and small business owners

Offer structured mentorship to small business owners through faculty experts, industry professionals, and retired business owners. Students shadow mentors while small business owners gain guidance via workshops and personalized support, fostering a culture that elevates entrepreneurship and drives social impact.

4. To advance research in the area of entrepreneurship, management and finance.

Support empirical, qualitative research that informs teaching and societal development. The Clinic collaborates with faculty researchers, PhD candidates, and the Research Chair in Entrepreneurship to develop case studies and projects that contribute to innovation in entrepreneurship and small business development.
