Why Study Geography?

  • Geographers are curious about space and place: Geographers are interested in how space is shaped into place through human and environmental processes;
  • Geographers are problem-solvers: As scientists, geographers are naturally curious about how the world is arranged and evolves. They ask questions about why things are located where they are and the implications thereof;
  • Geographers make connections: They seek to connect seemingly unrelated processes, integrating ideas about human behaviour, social institutions, and the natural environment;
  • Geographers explore relationship: We are interested in connections between people and the environment, seeing the world as the human habitat, one that we have transformed and that has transformed us; and
  • Geographers visualise spatial information: We do so through the latest technology using Geographical Information Systems (GIS), revolutionising the way we collect, store, analyse, and present spatial information.
