Biography

Dr. Makhaya Malema is a senior lecturer and deputy head of department in the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Sciences at the University of the Western Cape. He holds a PhD in Sport, Recreation and Exercise Sciences from UWC, a Master of Arts in Recreational Science from North-West University, and a BSc in Recreation and Leisure Studies from the University of Venda. His research focuses on leisure, recreation, physical activity, leadership, and sport for people with disabilities. His work supports several UN Sustainable Development Goals, including health and well-being, gender equality, reduced inequalities, sustainable communities, and global partnerships. Dr. Makhaya is also actively involved in community recreation initiatives with NGOs and health institutions serving disadvantaged and disabled populations.

Biography:

Dr Jaron Ras is a registered Biokineticist with the Health Professions Council of South Africa (HPCSA) and a senior lecturer in the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science at the University of the Western Cape. He lectures in Exercise Physiology, Chronic Disease, Research Methodology, and Exercise Science. His research primarily focuses on the health and occupational performance of firefighters, with particular attention to cardiovascular and musculoskeletal health, physical fitness, and health-risk behaviours. Dr Ras also explores areas such as psychological well-being, technology in health monitoring, and health education among firefighters in the Western Cape. Additionally, he is involved in high-performance sport, biomechanics, and chronic disease research, and leads both local and international projects involving firefighters, blue light personnel, sports schools, and sport governance.

Biography:

Dr. Phindile Malema is a Lecturer in Biokinetics in the Department of Sport, Recreation and Exercise Science at the University of the Western Cape. A Biokineticist by profession and academic by passion, she graduated top of her class at both undergraduate and honours levels. She holds a Master’s degree from UWC and PhD in Biokinetics. Dr Phindile Malema is actively involved in national and international research collaborations, including projects with Liverpool John Moores University and the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, focusing on health access and innovation. She also contributes to an AI-driven educational initiative within UWC and is part of a Telerehabilitation research project alongside senior academics. In addition to her research, she supervises Honours and Master’s students and is committed to advancing education and healthcare delivery through interdisciplinary collaboration.
