Knowledge that
changes lives.

At the University of the Western Cape, impact begins with a belief that education can change lives. Our history of resisting exclusion continues to shape a university committed to access, social justice and the public good.

Founded in 1960 under apartheid, UWC grew into a place of resistance, critical inquiry and opportunity. That history lives on in our teaching, research and partnerships, and in the everyday work of opening doors, supporting students and working with communities.

Our institutional vision and mission connect academic excellence with social responsibility. The Institutional Operating Plan gives that purpose practical direction, guiding how we develop knowledge, strengthen opportunities and respond to the challenges around us.

From classrooms and laboratories to neighbourhoods and international partnerships, our contribution takes many forms. The Sustainable Development Goals offer a shared lens through which to explore this work and its contribution to a more equitable, sustainable future.
